It’s a nice little park. I was standing to the right of the fenced in area that you see in the first picture. That area is still there and has benches.

In those days, there was no bike parking, and if you did leave your bike somewhere you could either kiss it goodbye or try to buy it back from the bike thief on St. Mark’s Place.
