People read newspapers on the train then. No smartphones, electronic readers, tablets, or earbuds. My daughter wonders how we lived.

Antisocial. What makes the photograph is not the alcoholic guy lighting up on the train (that was just as illegal in 1991 as it is now), but the reactions of the other passengers.
