2025: Year in Review

It was a tumultuous year by any measure and a year that made us think about our values as a nation. I spent most of it in New York City, covering one demonstration after another. On a trip to France I thought about America’s past role as defender of democracy, and in New Mexico I learned about the history of the many Native American nations who made this state unique.

February 17: Demonstration in Washington Square Park

March 8: International Women’s Day, Union Square

March 15: Demonstration in Foley Square across from the Federal courthouse

March 16: Lower Manhattan

April 5 demonstration, City Hall

April 5, Lower Manhattan

April 16: Massive Hands Off protest, Fifth Avenue
May 14: the American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy overlooking Omaha Beach

June 14, 5th Avenue

October 13: Navajo family at a large powwow on Indigenous People’s Day in Santa Fe, New Mexico

November 2: the 99th running of the New York Marathon had a photo finish in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Benson Kipruto (left) edged out his Kenyan teammate at the finish line.

November 26: outgoing Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch hold a news conference the night before the Thanksgiving Day Parade to assure New Yorkers and the world that the parade would be well protected by NYPD.

December: since birds are traditionally symbolic of hope, I offer this beautiful Yellow-throated Warbler who halted his migration south to the tropics and is surviving a New York winter in Manhattan.
